When you prepare early, you can dramatically raise the odds of surviving a nuclear war.
Nuclear war is an awful thing. It could kill millions, destroy cities, and leave countless others homeless and frightened. It would be a disaster of epic proportions. But what if you could survive a nuclear holocaust?
A nuclear war is one of the most terrifying things that could happen to a human being. It would mean the end of human civilization as we know it. It would mean the end of life as we know it. It would mean the end of the world as we know it.
While it may seem impossible, nuclear war could definitely happen given the turmoil in the world today. In the event of a nuclear holocaust, only a few would survive. The majority would be killed, their bodies left to decay and turn into pools of radioactive waste. If you want to avoid this fate, you have to learn how to survive a nuclear war.
Here are Six Things You Can Do Now to ensure the survival of you and your family if a nuclear holocaust does happen:
1. Avoid It!
The first thing to do if you want to survive a nuclear war is to avoid being caught in one in the first place. As the saying goes, “you’re not supposed to notice when a nuclear war begins; you’re supposed to notice when it ends”. Being aware of current events is a good start. The more you know about the potential for nuclear war, the better prepared you will be. The best case scenario if a nuclear war were to happen would be to be located in an area that is not in the path of the fallout. Keep yourself informed of international events that could lead to a nuclear war. Many countries have, or are developing, nuclear weaponry. The more countries that have nuclear weapons, the more likely that something will trigger the use of them.
2. Get to a Fallout Shelter
If you are in the path of a nuclear fallout, the best way to avoid being killed instantly by the gamma radiation is to have access to a shielded concrete nuclear fallout shelter that will protect you and your family. This may be on your property, or a community shelter. You will have a very short window of time to relocate yourself and your family to the shelter, so time will be of the essence. As we have written about in a previous article, being part of a community is very important, especially when disaster strikes. Whichever option you choose, personal or community shelter, you will need to remain there for at least 3 full days while the fallout subsides.
3. Set Up Your Post-Holocaust Shelter
One of the most important things you can do prior to a holocaust is to secure a post-holocaust shelter, where you and your family will be safe from intruders. The best location for this would be the most remote location you can find, preferrably in a wooded area. Many preppers have already secured this type of shelter, often referred to as their “bug out” location. Besides location, there are other factors to consider in selecting this shelter, such as access to food and clean water. This is why so many people have their bug out location in the mountains, where there is wildlife as well as fresh water springs, creeks or rivers nearby.
4. Have Lots of Water
Once you have settled in to your shelter, you will need clean water for continued survival. To prepare, you should fill your shelter with many, many gallons of water. However, this will only last a certain amount of time. In a post-holocaust scenario, fresh water is going to be the most valuable resource. This is why your shelter needs to be near a water source, if at all possible. You should learn how to purify water and also how to create a water delivery system for your shelter.
5. Have a Stash of Emergency Food
The next important item needed for continued survival after a nuclear war is food. Initially, along with the water in your shelter, stock your shelter with an emergency food supply of long term storable food. It is also important to have skills in finding and preparing various types of food. Knowing about berries, nuts, and other food that you can find growing wild in your area is important, as well as knowing about the kinds of foods that will grow in your region. There are many aspects of this to consider, such as; knowing how to build a fire for cooking (and having a dependable fire starter), knowing how, when and where to grow food, and being able to hunt for food, just to name a few.
6. Know How To Defend Yourself & Your Family
Something else that may prove to be critical for survival after a nuclear war is the ability to defend yourself. This includes knowing how to fend off attacks from wild animals, as well as being prepared to defend yourself against attacks from other survivors. If you are well-prepared, and others are not, you may face a situation where others want what you have, and you need to be prepared mentally and physically to defend yourself and your family if they attempt to take what you have. I mention being mentally prepared because, if you are going to survive, you may at some point find yourself in a “him or me” type of situation. In this situation, you have to decide, without hesitation, that you are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect yourself and your family.
You should equipped yourself with weapons and plenty of ammunition for both hunting and self-defense. You also need to know how to use and maintain your weapons. So start collecting ammo and practice firing your weapons. Remember, desperation and lack of planning may lead people to do things that they would never do under normal circumstances. Also consider taking a self-defense class or signing up for karate.
